BIOGRAPHY
 
When George W Pitts was born on September 29, 1919, in Weymouth, Massachusetts, his father, Walter, was 22 and his mother, Mabel, was 22. He had eight brothers and three sisters. He died on May 21, 1983, in Sitka, Alaska, at the age of 63, and was buried there. In Rye his family lived on Greenhaven Road. George enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

A graveside service was held today for George W. Pitts, 63, who died Saturday of cancer the Sitka Community Hospital.

Pitts was born Sept. 29,1919, Weymouth, Mass., to Walter Mabel Pitts. He attended schools on the East Coast, then joined Navy in 1939 and served during World War II.

After the war, he worked years as a salesman for Institutional Foods and later for Brown University in Providence, R.I. He moved to Sitka in 1980, worked as a custodian at Sitka High School.

Surviving Pitts are his wife, Joyce, in Rhode Island; two Howard of Sitka and Dennis Swansea, Mass.; and a brother, Harold, of New York. A graveside service was held Monday at the Sitka National Cemetery, with Deacon Charles M. Johnson officiating. The family has requested donations be made to the American Cancer Society in of flowers.
